ABSTRACT:
The identified language profile of a student/graduate represents a reliable framework for assessing the quality of language learning and teaching. It should help students, language teachers and language programme deliverers decide about and discriminate between planned outcomes with regard to the scope of available lessons (be they contact hours or those reserved for self-study). However, in addition it provides a scheme of the social interactions in which a graduate may become involved. In this context, the linguistic audit can be perceived not only as a means for identifying foreign language proficiency needs, but its findings also identify and characterize the social interactions materialized in verbal communication. Thus the linguistic audit is a reliable tool to be used in evaluating the fit between professional skills and qualifications, on the one hand, and a particular job description, on the other.
KEY WORDS: language profile, language learning, language teaching, linguistic audit.
